I remember at the time telling myself that their mates would eventually turn up. Years later, the sad reality of all these single unlucky socks sat there staring me in the face causing me to think...it sucks for all these perfectly good socks to be without partner.

Doing what any rational human being would do, I laid them all out on my bed and tried matching them up one by one. A lucky pair or two found their mates but the rest sat there looking all pathetic by themselves. Despite many close similarities, their resounding differences screamed out; too short, different pattern, or slightly off in color. The more I looked without finding a match, the more I thought about taking the easy route and pairing up like socks with one another. After all, who would know the difference? Well the answer is that deep down, I would; and that's just something I wasn't ready to accept, at least not yet. With that, I thought to myself, how close is good enough and how far is settling? Well friends, only you can answer that question for yourself.

One might think though that staring long enough at these socks until you start noticing each and every individual lint speck would be a catalyst for a hurried decision, but yet strangely enough, the opposite occurred. That is, the longer I stared, the longer I was resistant towards forcing two socks into an unfitted pair. I kept telling myself "I know I'd seen this one's mate somewhere" and remembered how good they were together. That's when it occurred to me that matching socks together is quite reminiscent of the game "Memory" we used to play as children. Not only do you have to recognize a match when you see one, you have to remember where you saw its mate and pull it out right then and there. As the name of the game implies, this is no easy task as one ages with time.

So the moral of today's story, always be prepared for the event that you see your perfect match in real life. Remember, it won't always be through an online search, by a friend's introduction, or a co-worker. Sometimes it is life's one chance encounters that might bring you your brief and one opportunity with that perfect match; a love at first site if you will. That's why we at SecondConnection have created the Black Card to help you with these opportunities.

Now that I've shared my thoughts with you, I leave you with a bit of levity. After being entranced with the complexities of socks and relationships for a five hour drive back home, I am starting to understand why I see so many women wearing flip flops.

Facebook for Dating?

Q. I realize it may seem like the easy way to "re-connect" with somebody you meet at a social gathering, but here are a few reasons why it's not the best way to go about it.

You have to make sure you get the girl's first and last name during the conversation without seeming like a stalker.

The girl might have a private profile and you'll have missed your chance to reconnect.

Even if you get past #1 and #2, do you really want your potential date to see those drunken "tags" of you that your bonehead friends decided to post?

C'mon, we've all had (or know somebody who has had) the awkward experience of having to delete a person off their friend list because things "didn't work out". Well either that, or you really don't give a rat's @$$ about the other person's feelings or impressions of you, in which case...carry on what you're doing because for some strange reason, there seems to be a lot of women who are attracted to that. Not the female readers of this blog of course!

My solution to you? Well, obviously the best choice is to be direct and ask for a woman's phone number. But did you know that in a survey of 18 to 44 yr old women, 20% of the women (1 in 5) would not give out their phone number or email address even if they are attracted to the man? With these odds, why take a chance? Sign up for a free account at SecondConnection and receive 10 Free SecondConnection Black Cards so next time you're prepared.

Follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/2ndconnection

Improve your dating chances by saying "Hello" to 10 strangers a day

Being born and raised in Los Angeles, but spending the past decade in the San Francisco Bay Area, I find myself beginning to understand why there is so much animosity from some Northern Californians towards Southern California. Finding myself travelling more and more to LA for work recently (and moving down at the end of this month!), I noticed something that I never paid attention to when I was an Angeleno. That is, the fact that people in LA are generally not that friendly.

However, as I observed more and thought of my own experiences working in the "Valley" now, I realized an important subtlety to that statement that was missing. That is, people in LA are generally not that friendly...to STRANGERS! I think everyone will agree that most Southern Californians are pretty friendly to their friends and acquaintances.

So now that I've rambled on for 2 paragraphs, many of you may be wondering what my point is and how it is related to the SecondConnection Dating blogsite. Well, the answer lies in a little experiment I tried for the past two weeks. I decided to get over my fear of being deemed a weirdo and said hello to every person I passed in my office building, on the street, or on the train to work (yes, there is a train in Los Angeles). This included deliverymen, old ladies, other guys, and of course women suitable for dating. What did I learn from all this? That people in LA are actually quite friendly if you only made the first effort!

With that, I have the following challenge for all you guys (and ladies) out there; wherever you live. I personally believe that if you take the steps I've listed below, you'll have more opportunities to make a date with a total stranger.

1. For one week, say "Hello" and smile to 10 strangers a day. Simple enough.

2. On week two, continue the "Hello" challenge and for a minimum of 3 of these strangers each day, follow it up with a genuine compliment. For the guys, this can be a simple "I really like your earrings" to a lady or a "That's a nice car" to another guy. Remember, it should be genuine and it's fine to practice with both genders. Seriously, be secure about your own sexuality. And remember, you're not hitting on the other person. For the ladies, I'm not going to give you any examples because us guys will get giddy after any compliment you give us...but that's a subject to be saved for some other blog.

3. Finally, by week three, hopefully you've mastered the challenges from Week 1 and 2 and are used to saying hi to a stranger and complimenting them without the fear of rejection. Now you are ready for that final step of making a second connection with that other person. If you're a guy, simply tell the woman "I'd really like to see you again sometime but didn't want to make you feel awkward or obligated to give me your phone number, but why don't you take my Black Card and send me a message sometime?" From what I understand, most women like guys who are confident and friendly, know how to give genuine compliments, and are considerate towards their feelings while being honest and direct. Sound good? Who knows, the woman may even be so impressed and just say why don't I give you my number instead? More power to you!

For all the Ladies out there, the SecondConnection Black Card may be of use to you as well if you don't prefer approaching guys. Next time you're not comfortable giving your number to a stranger, the Black Card offers you a safe means of communicating with somebody until you get to know them better. Or you may want to try my challenge as well! Then again, I can't say I really understand women all that well still but I'd love to hear your feedback.

Now go out there and start meeting some new people!

Till next time,
Drew

Welcome to the SecondConnection Blog!

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the SecondConnection Blog.
